Ivalo Abelsen, born in 1971 in Nuuk, is an artist who explores a wide range of artistic expressions and materials. Her creative process is driven by a deep desire and curiosity, which is clearly reflected in her diverse works. Abelsen is not afraid to experiment.
A distinctive characteristic of Abelsen's works is her penchant for clean lines, symmetry and a simple aesthetic, which often gives her works a timeless and harmonious quality.
Abelsen's artistic involvement includes membership of KIMIK, the Greenlandic artists' association, as well as participation in several solo and group exhibitions. Her works also adorn public spaces such as BankNordik in Nuuk and Greenlandic stamps.
In addition to her significant contribution to the art world, Abelsen has a career as a teacher. She has taught for many years at the art school, at the high school in visual arts. For the past six years, she has taught arts and crafts at the Department of Learning at Ilisimatusarfik.
Her solid educational background with a Cand. Master's degree in cultural and social history, teacher in visual arts and design and the Art School in Nuuk, supplemented by a minor in Handcrafts and Design, have been decisive in shaping her artistic vision and strengthening her technical skills. These studies have equipped her with a deep understanding of cultural and societal contexts, as well as given her valuable tools to express her ideas and reflections through art.
Through her dedication as both artist and teacher, Abelsen has been a central figure in the education and inspiration of future generations of artists in Greenland
Abelsen has received a grant, including the self-government's work grant. Her career will be celebrated through an exhibition showcasing her work from the past 25 years, reflecting her ongoing experimentation and development as an artist.
