UjaRock (Steen Olsen) has been a well-known figure on the Greenlandic music scene for many years but has now, for the first time, released music under his own name.
UjaRock’s debut album, Illerngit Aqqutivut, was written and composed in collaboration with Kaali Olsen and was released in November 2024. The album later went on to win the Album of the Year award at the Koda Awards.
UjaRock’s music explores the many facets of life – from the bright to the darker sides. It touches on themes such as identity, acceptance, love, hate, bullying, and exclusion. UjaRock shares authentic stories from childhood, youth, and adulthood. The songs also carry messages of faith, hope, and dreams of a better life in an inclusive society shaped by mutual respect and tolerance.
The guitar is the dominant instrument on the album, and the music moves unpolished between genres like melodic rock, folk-rock, and pop. The lyrics and music merge to create a cohesive narrative that dives into the deepest – and at times darker – corners of the soul.
