Martin Brandt Hansen, known to many from the satirical TV show Labrador Kangiani, has made a major leap – from being an on-screen actor to becoming one of Greenland's most educated artists. With one of the highest art degrees in the kingdom under his belt, he now dreams of bringing Greenland to the world – through his art.

 

After completing both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Martin stands as a fresh voice in the art world. His works, which have already been sold to both art collectors and businesses, have attracted attention at several solo exhibitions.

Greenland at the Center

Martin’s art is deeply rooted in his Greenlandic heritage. He primarily works with sculptures and installations, interpreting Greenlandic masks and tupilak figures, combining them with Western elements. In doing so, he creates narratives that reflect Greenland’s encounter with the rest of the world.

 

He is mindful of the history behind the visualization of Tupilaks, which were often crafted by Greenlanders and sold as souvenirs to foreigners eager to visualize Greenlandic spiritual stories. In his installation art, he crafts a story of contemporary Greenland, interacting with Greenland's ancient history and that of its people.

 

“These works are in high demand. But I haven’t wanted to sell them before I could exhibit them in Greenland,” says Martin, who dreams of displaying his work in his homeland.

Looking Toward the Future

Although Martin’s works are in demand internationally, he has a clear vision of contributing to the development of art in Greenland. He hopes to inspire young Greenlandic artists to break traditional boundaries and create something new.


“I want to show my art to the people where I come from. Also, because they can recognize something Greenlandic that is part of my art,” he says enthusiastically.


Today, Martin works from his studio in Copenhagen, preparing new exhibitions, but his heart still beats for Greenland. He hopes to contribute to the local art scene and create something that can inspire other Greenlanders.

An Artist Greenland Can Be Proud Of

Martin Brandt Hansen is not just a talented artist; he is also a role model for young people in Greenland. His goal is to show the world what Greenland has to offer while inspiring others to pursue their creative dreams.


Greenland has gained an artist it can be proud of – a highly educated Greenlandic artist who showcases Greenland to the world through his artworks.

Well-Received by Citizens

During the opening of his exhibition ELASTOMANIA, Martin Brandt Hansen was warmly received by the citizens of Nuuk. At least 100 people attended the opening, which Martin had not expected.

 

“I hadn’t anticipated that so many people would show up. It was surprising to see such a large turnout for the ELASTOMANIA opening,” says Martin Brandt Hansen, concluding:

 

“Since 2019, I have exhibited at several international art museums and sold works to established art collectors abroad. I am therefore very pleased to finally showcase my art – Greenlandic art – to the Greenlandic people.”
