The title Hybrid has lived within Lisbeth for a long time—lingering, stirring, pushing, and filling her thoughts—while simultaneously raising the question: “What am I?” With a background as both Greenlandic and Danish, the artist experiences herself as mixed, blended, and dual. Her identity is familiar and accepted, yet it continues to shift when circumstances change.
Lisbeth Karline was born in Nanortalik and grew up on Funen and in Uummannaq. Her imaginative mind emerged early during her years in primary school, where she immersed herself in creative subjects. She carried this passion with her through boarding school and high school in Aasiaat until she attended the Nuuk Art School in 2003. She then studied at the Aarhus Art Academy from 2005 to 2009. After returning to Nuuk in 2011, she later became a member of the artists’ association KIMIK and served on its board. Her work has resulted in numerous group exhibitions, postage stamps, stage designs, costumes, and theatrical productions. Hybrid is her fourth solo exhibition.
In her artistic practice, the artist combines materials and ideas because hybrids can sometimes embody the best of two—or more—worlds. The project began with the intention of presenting a definitive answer to what it means to be a colonized hybrid in the present day. Instead, it starts with the artist herself and her personal point of departure as an artist, here and now.
