"Kalak" is based on Kim Leine's autobiographical debut novel of the same name, and directed by the great Swedish talent Isabella Eklöf, who is known, among other things, for directing 'Holiday' (2018) and writing the screenplay for Ali Abassi's film 'Grænse' (2018 ).
Jan is on the run from himself after being sexually abused by his father as a youngster. Now he lives in Greenland with his small family and works as a nurse. But he feels far away from Copenhagen and his own past, which he otherwise tries to put behind him. He longs to become part of the local culture – to become a real kalak, a 'fucking Greenlander', expressed with equal parts love and self-loathing. In his search, however, Jan becomes more and more careless and eventually has to realize that a confrontation with the traumas of the past is necessary if he is to save himself and his family.

The book by Kim Leine
The film is based on the popular autobiographical book written by the author Kim Leine, who, among other things, is described as follows:
"A story that captures and reflects a life constantly on the borders. So arresting and sadly descriptive, and at the same time so beautiful and human. You feel you are in his thoughts and you are in Greenland."
