How does it feel to be young in the wake of colonialism? Having to find your identity

between the unwritten pages of history books and black holes in the collective

consciousness? What happened? When did it happen? Did it ever stop?

What does it have to do with me? And why do nobody talk about this?

The nordic colonialism is an unfinished tale. A tale composed by many voices. In the

installation 'Unfinished Tales - a collective story' they meet in a raw and poetic archive of

the emotional heritage and collective memories, told and experienced by youth from the

Nordics, Ghana and St. Croix.

On stage are 2 performers, and between them two metal boxes. Inside these boxes are

archived stories, thoughts, questions, visions, ideas, emotions, knowledge, experiences.

Sometimes they agree. Sometimes they don’t. But even so, they are connected.

Together with the audience, the 2 dancers unfold the archive in a poetic and sensuous

space. Wellknown smell of coffee, tiny landscapes of sugar, videofilm, words and music is pulled out of the boxes and unfolded with care, attention, recognition, severity, humor and respect.

Background

The research project 'Unfinished Tales' (2019-2021) was a cross-atlantic project

investigating the bodily, cultural an emotional heritage of nordic colonialism in collaboration between artists and youth from Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland), Førøyar (Faroe Islands), Ísland (Iceland), Norge (Norway), Sverige (Sweden)/Sapmi, Finland/Sapmi, Ghana, Ay Ay (St Croix) and Danmark (Denmark).

 

9 short movies were created in collaboration between the choreographers and local youth from Nuuk, Accra, Ay Ay, Skellefteå, Inari, Tórshavn, Reykjavik, Oslo and Copenhagen. Under the title "Descendants" the youth expressed though movements and words their experience of nordic colonialism as it embody itself in their everyday life and thoughts. Parallel to this work, the choreographers engaged in a series of inter-relational portraits - the "Ghost coffee sessions" - exploring identity, representation and sense of belonging within the artistic group.

 

A curator team of youth invited from among the participants of the reserach in 2019-2021, will select material for the live-installation of "Unfinished tales - a collective story".

The selected material will be staged by the artistgroup, the choreographers guiding in

couples the audiences through the installation, where film, movement, texts, sound and

objects will be unfolded and animated in collaboration between audience and performers.
