Katuarpalaaq
Katuarpalaaq is a festival with the traditional drum at its center. The Inuit people share a strong cultural heritage across national borders, and it is important to explore and share this cultural heritage together. The purpose of Katuarpalaaq is to share and convey knowledge and stories through traditional dance and song. The traditions of the Inuit people contain both similarities and differences, which are exciting to explore. In some regions, the old traditions are more widespread and actively used than in others, and in West Greenland there has been a significant increase in the use of drum dance in recent years.
On 15 December 2021, drum dance and song were included on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage and at a ceremony in connection with Katuarpalaaq in March 2022, the proof was handed over to the Greenland National Museum. Katuaq, like the entire Greenlandic cultural center, has an obligation to strengthen, preserve and develop our traditional cultural heritage. To keep this important cultural heritage alive, the drum needs to be picked up and played.
